It's your choice//Illustrations

A stitch in time saves nine

Here is the process of designing the 'A stitch in time saves nine' postcard. Similarly to the previous design, its started with a scanned in illustration to Illustrator.

Tomorrow is another day

Here are the developments of the illustrations for the 'tomorrow is another day' postcard.

It started off with an illustration of a typewriter  that was then scanned into illustrator.

Experimenting with type, colour, opacity and strokes, a few different versions have been designed.

It's your choice//Design Sheets

Here is the progress of the initial ideas and designs for redoing the proverb brief.

For 'tomorrow is another day'

Here are the hand drawn illustrations that will be scanned into illustrator to create the final designs. The drawings are simple with a black outline but they need to be in order for them to be experimented with.

Below shows a quick outline of the

What is your choice?//Rationale

What are you going to do?
I am re-visiting the proverbally yours choice from module OUGD403. I'm going to design and produce five postcards each communicating a different proverb. The postcards will be A5 size. I have chosen proverbs that I think someone would want to communicate to someone else. Whether it is a motivational saying or something more general. I decided not to use my own proverb as I don't think it is as well known and really relavent in a postcard format. On the back of the postcards I am going to create an area where a message can be written and a address.

Why have you chosen it?
I have chosen to make the decision to replace the three posters with a set of postcards because I think they will have more of a purpose. I think the proverbs I have personally picked are most relevant and communicate an appropriate message. I have also chosen this format because I wanted to experiment with stock. I have not given myself colour limitations like the original brief.

How will you improve it?
As I have not given myself any real limitations I think it will give me more potential to experiment and therefore get a more desired outcome. I would like to create my postcards in a handmade style, including illustration and hand-rendered type. I am also going to make some sort of case or sleeve to hold the postcards together. I want the postcards to work well as a set so that they are aimed at a similar target audience.

End of module evaluation- OUGD404

Self-Evaluation

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Before this module I had never been taught about how to measure type an how to set up a layout on Indesign. Now I feel more confident using the programme and able to recreate a hand drawn design and apply it to a digital format. I find myself expanding my level of knowledge on the design programmes more and more. I have also learned more about colour theory and tried to apply it in my design work when necessary. I really enjoyed the frame and format project as I like how it started with something so simple and then progressed on to something more self-directed and different. I think I have started to follow this process more recently in other projects.

 2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
As the layout and grid project was completely knew to me and I have learned so much from it I feel that the approaches that we were taught within it is definitely something I will do in the future. Creating a collection of different thumbnail designs really helps channel your ideas and you ed up getting a more effective and valid outcome I feel.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how/will you capitalise on these?
I think one of my strengths is being able to learn new skills quickly and apply them to the appropriate format. I think I am good at working with a group and contribute well to talks. Equally I am confident in giving advice others and receiving design advice from people on the course.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you adress these in the future?
I think overall in this module I could have done a lot more work and felt better with my final pieces. I feel that I really enjoyed my concept and felt it was strong but I didn't pursue it to its full potential. Another weakness is that I have a habit of not going back to things that I could develop thing.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
1.Next time I would try to spend more independent time on colour theory as their is so much to it and i feel like I could really benefit on knowing more of the theory side.
2. As the module was longer than previous ones I found it harder to manage my time. Their were quite a few little things that I would forget to do. It may have been easier if I set myself mini deadlines to help me manage my workload more effectively.
3. Next time I think I would have liked to of got my what is a line printed with a better finish as I was not really happy with my final outcomes.
4. I would document my work more precisely and more often.
5. Would go back and recreate my typeface and make an alphabet.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:

Attendance- 4
Punctuality- 4
Motivation- 3
Commitment- 3
Quantity of work produced- 2
Quality of work produced- 2
Contribution to the group- 3

Some of the images were taken by myself but due to surf conditions I had to use to some images from the internet to communicate the location and to create a good picture of the place at its best. The pictures I sourced were from
