10 Things//Info-graphics

Info-graphics

Above are simply created info-graphics that came from the previous research found involving social media and mobile phones. Some are more ambiguous than others, yet it each one has tried to keep similar aesthetics. Also, keeping in tie with familiar aesthetics like 'facebook' and 'twitter' allow the audience to quickly make a link between the information displayed and in the correct context.

Design Principles// Hotdog// Final Ten

Final Outcomes
Here is the final printed version of the hot dog.

The pattern made up of the featured watches works well with the overlay of the poem. The lower opacity applied onto the illustrations allows the type to really stand out and be the focal point of the poster.

Here is what the reverse side of the poster would look like. When it is flat, this side doesn't really work in the same way. However this layout was done for a reason. The reason being that when it is folded each watch will be feature in a book like style.

Above shows the front of the booklet. The fold is where the middle of the watch is, therefore splitting the illustration in half. A watch fact sits beside the illustration.

The way the book works is pretty evidential. As each page is turned, a different watch and time related fact is featured.

Overall the book is simple. But it is aesthetically pleasing and nicely linked to the original starting point.

10 Things//Development

Initial sketches

These are the initial handrawn sketches that will be put onto the phone boxes. It was decided to go for a more illustrative and authentic style to display something a bit different. As research showed that other mobile phone packaging was quite slick, stylish and digitalised. A small collection of phones were selected to observationally draw.

Design Principles// Hotdog

Development

Here is a brief idea of layout and composition.

Here is the development and experimentation process of creating the watch illustrations.

Using illustrator and a design tablet these watches were drawn from scratch. They were each based on existing watches which are very different and represent peoples personalities.

Once four aesthetically different watches were created, a pattern using them was experimented with.

It started off with just using two of the watches to experiment with layout.

The layout of the fold out booklet then needed to be resolved so that as each page was unfolded a different watch and fact would be featured.

10 Things//Evaluation-Process of project development

Evaluation

What is the problem?
people rely too much on mobile devices and the support of social networking. By creating virtual profiles, people spend less time communicating in conventional ways.

What subject/area are you focussing on?
The focal point is social media and mobile info-graphics on mobile phone packaging.

To what depth are you investigating this area /subject? Is this sufficient?
The subject has moved on quite a bit, looking further into statistics and facts that relate to social media and more specific areas within this.

What is the form and amount of research to date?
Mainly looked into facts and figures. Also done quite a bit of research into info-graphics regarding social media. Looking at layout and how they communicate effectively. Constructed multiple surveys for primary research, regarding certain areas of technology. Given a more realistic view on current trends.

What visual material do you have to work with?
Mostly design sheets that display the general idea of how the problem is going to be solved. Looks into different forms of design such as leaflets, flyers and packaging, all of which could be used to communicate social media.

Is there an appropriate amount of work for the time you have thad to develop it?
There is obviously much more work to be done on the idea, as it is still rather vague. However, the amount of research that has been done to get to this point is borderline acceptable in the time given.

If there isn't, why is this? How could you improve your work rate?
By creating a clear and direct plan of what needs to be done in order to reach the deadline.

What is your timescale? When is the deadline?
The deadline is on the 8th therefore, getting making a firm decision on which route to go down in terms of design, needs to happen. Once this has been made, its a matter of making the design into ten products successfully.

What is achievable in the time available?
Creating ten mobile phone boxes that solve the problem.

What methods are you using to evaluate the process of you ideas?
Mainly using trial and error as the product will be 3-D, a few mock ups of nets have been tested to find the correct size and a beneficial layout for the info-graphics.

Focus

What are you identifying as areas worth developing further?
The area of how social media is something many people rely on this day in age. It is something that could be worth looking into further in terms of changing the way people use it, as many people use it for the wrong reasons.

What are you trying to communicate?
Trying to communicate the the relationship between mobiles and social networking.

What audience have you identified?
It is quite a broad target audience. Targeting mainly the younger generation who are signed up to various social networking sites and rely on a mobile.

Who are they?
Members of the general public who are likely to go into a phone shop and purchase a smartphone.

What problem(s) have you identified?
In general it is quite hard to find the appropriate format to communicate the facts and statistics of social media.

How do you intend to solve these?
By using phone packaging and it links well to the purpose of a mobile in the current times. Therefore people who buy these phones are most likely to read the info graphics and relate to them.

What further research does this require? (what, where, who, when?)
Looking into how simple and direct the info-graphics need to be in order for people to actually look at them and understand. Depending on the age of the audience, they need to be legible and eye-catching.

What is your intention?
To ensure the packaging successful communicates info-graphics regarding social media and mobile usage.

Development

Have you moved on from your initial starting point. If so, how and why?
The orignal starting point for this project was looking at technology, however as this is a very broad topic it was important to pick a more specific focal point within this area. Thats how the idea of researching social media came into play. Also because it is such a relevant issue this day in age, it seemed appropriate.

What methods are you using to document this development?
Mainly just by design sheets but also but by collecting and researching.

What processes will you need to use to develop your work?
The process will be mostly digital with incorporation of illustration.

Do these processes require workshop access?
The digital print room will need to be accessed when ready to print the final products.

When do you intend to access these workshops?
Thursday the 2nd of February as that is when the print slot is.

10 Things//Chosen statistics

10 statistics chosen to communicate social media

1. The average Facebook user logs on at least once a day and has 130 friends.
2. Facebook has over 800 users and half of these have access on their mobile.
3. 200 million people have Twitter, 80% of these have it on their mobile.
4. The average Facebook user is connected to 80 events and groups.
5. 28% of 18-34 years olds check Facebook before getting out of bed on their smart phones.
6. More women than men access social networking on their mobile. But more men than women send and receive instant messages.
7. In America, the average person spends 10% of their day browsing on their mobile.
8. 20% of online page views are via mobile devices.
9. 37% of Twitter users update their status through a mobile.
10. Over 450 mobile operators promote Facebook mobile products.
