The main use for InDesign is LAYOUT.
-Multiple page format
-Brings everything together.
Go to 'File, 'New Document' which takes you to 'Presets'.
Go to 'More options' if necessary.
When it comes to printing a document, you must always print onto a larger scale than the document actually is so that all the whole image is printed. Use the 'Bleed' and 'Slug' options to ensure this. The average bleed amount is 3mm. The slug also defines an area outside of the page. The slug area is always bigger than the bleed area.
If you have 'Facing Pages' checked then you will have two pages against one another on the screen.
This is an examples of a new document once options have been altered.
Go to 'Pages' in the right hand corner to insert how many pages you wish to insert. This makes it easier to manages and navigate the pages in the document.
This is how an 'Facing page' document would appear.
To insert type into the document, by using the type tool you must click and drag to create an area in which you wish to insert text. By clicking on 'Type' then scrolling down to 'Fill with placeholder text' you can then fill areas with random text to create an idea what it will look like.
With the selection tool you can resize and alter the space in which your text will be presented.
If you resize an area which is too small to contain all the text, a red cross will appear in the corner of the text box. By clicking on this box, it will allow you to create another box to insert the rest of the text into. This two text boxes are now linked. This is extremely helpful when creating columns.
PHOTOSHOP IMAGES
1. 300 dpi
2. Print= CMYK or GREYSCALE
3. TIFF or PSD
4. Actual size
ILLUSTRATOR IMAGES
1. Print= CMYK or GREYSCALE
2. Save as an AI (Illustrator file).
Always place a file into an area.
Then when you choose a file to place, it will automatically fit into this area.
After placing the illustrator file into the InDesign document the resolution of the illustrator image is poor quality.
When going to print you must take both the InDesign file and the Illustrator file. Both these files can be found in the right hand corner in the links pallet.
To position your images on the page you can use the 'Object' options menu to arrange your layout.
To preview the document press the letter 'w' to see the layout of the page without any frames.
