Design Principles//Type and Grid

Grids, Type and Stuff
*make up of type
- components
- weights and sizes
- styles

What is...?
Leading- The space between each line of text.
Kerning- The space between pairs of letterforms.
Tracking- The space within the block of text.
A font is a digitally formed letterform whereas a typeface can be found anywhere in a variation of formats.

Using Type
-Readability
-Heirarchy; headings, sub heads, intro, body, folios.
-Specials, breakouts (pull quotes), drop caps.

Reverse out- 'The type is reversed out of the background'.

Explaining leading

So if the point size of the type above was for example '10 pt' and the space between the lines of type (leading) was '4pt', it could be said that this piece of text is '10pt with 4pt leading' OR '10/14pt.

By using the rulers above, the size of a typeface can be measure along with the leading.
